Biographie
An Laurence is a Tiohtià:ke/Montreal-based musician (guitar/voice) specializing in new/experimental music, and a performance/multimedia artist whose works address human relationships, memory and transnational identity. A daring performer, she collaborates with artists of various disciplines, and thrives in settings that stretch the limits of traditional music performance. As a soloist, improviser and ensemble musician, An Laurence’s performance style ranges from contemporary classical to electronic music, as well as spoken and sung performance works. She is co-founder of The Paramorph Collective (with Kim Farris-Manning) and the duo alokori (with Sara Constant). An Laurence has performed for, among others, No Hay Banda, Festival Accès Asie, Oh my ears! festival, Ottawa Guitar Society, 21C guitar fest, and Codes d’accès. Her works have been presented by the Chinatown Biennial, the MUP festival, the Gham&Dafe gallery and others. She has been awarded artistic residencies by Oboro and Vidéographe. Her recent works include the storytelling performance/installation “Approchez, je vous raconterai ce que j’ai oublié”, the narrative video-music “Chants d’amour”, and the short experimental opera “‘til death do us' ' created with Kim Farris-Manning. In 2019, she independently produced and directed the project “Émergences (f.pl.)”, commissioning 5 news works for flute (Sara Constant), guitar and multimedia by emerging women composers and culminating in performances in Montreal and Toronto. As a multimedia artist, An-Laurence has explored her transnational identity as an adoptee of Chinese origin through the multimedia installation “Confidences en trois temps” (2018) and the interactive performance “Approchez, je vous raconterai ce que j’ai oublié / Come Closer, I’ll tell you what I forgot” (2021). An Laurence is an avid collaborator and believes the act of creation is one of sharing and caring. Committed to her community, An-Laurence was a co-organizer of the Montreal Contemporary Music Lab peer-mentorship program from 2017-2021, and joined in 2020 the Board of directors of Codes d’accès (2020-2021) and the Canadian New Music Network (2020-2022).
