Récemment, il a été choisi par la soprano canadienne Barbara Hannigan pour faire partie d’Equilibrium Young Artists 2019/20, un programme de mentorat de réputation internationale.
Au TSO, Rivard est mentoré par le directeur musical par intérim Sir Andrew Davis. En plus de diriger la plupart des concerts scolaires et jeunesses, il a été l’assistant de plusieurs chefs invités de réputation internationale, tels que Gustavo Gimeno (directeur musical désigné), Donald Runnicles, Barbara Hannigan, Ludovic Morlot, John Storgårds et Thomas Dausgaard. En 2020-2021, il fera ses débuts avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Kitchener-Waterloo et sera l’assistant de Barbara Hannigan à la Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (Nouvelle-Écosse) et à l’Orchestre symphonique de Gothenburg (Suède).
En 2019, il a fait des débuts remarqués avec Symphony Nova Scotia (Nouvelle-Écosse) et la violoniste finlandaise Elina Vähälä. En 2018, il a participé au premier programme de mentorat pour jeunes chefs d’orchestre du célèbre Verbier Festival Academy. En plus d’être mentoré par le chef russe Valery Gergiev, il a été l’assistant de Sir Simon Rattle, Gianandrea Noseda, Marc Minkowski et Gábor Takács-Nagy. À la fin du Verbier Festival, on lui a remis le Prix Spécial du Verbier Festival Academy, pour l’aider à continuer son mentorat avec maestros Gergiev et Noseda.
En 2017-2018, Rivard a occupé le poste de chef en résidence de l’Orchestre symphonique de Thunder Bay (Ontario). En 2017, il a remplacé au pied levé Jean-Philippe Tremblay à la barre de l’Orchestre de la Francophonie, dans une tournée canadienne fructueuse.
Né à Montréal (Québec), Rivard a étudié le violon avec Anne Robert et la direction d’orchestre avec Raffi Armenian au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Il a obtenu une maîtrise en direction d’orchestre de l’Université McGill, où il a étudié notamment avec Alexis Hauser et Guillaume Bourgogne.

Simon Rivard has been serving as Resident Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra since 2018. He has recently been named Associate Conductor of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, the largest choral organization in Canada. Since 2019, he has been an Equilibrium Young Artist, as part of Canadian soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan's internationally acclaimed mentorship program for early-career professional musicians.
At the TSO, Rivard is mentored by Music Director Gustavo Gimeno. In addition to leading school and family concerts as well as special events, he has been assisting world-class conductors such as Sir Andrew Davis, Donald Runnicles, Barbara Hannigan, Ludovic Morlot, John Storgårds, and Thomas Dausgaard. In 2021, he made a critically acclaimed début with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec and cellist Matt Haimovitz. He also collaborated with celebrated Toronto-based opera company Against The Grain, in Gustav Holst’s chamber opera Savitri. In 2020, he led players of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra as part of their All Saints’ Day concert.
In 2018, Rivard was invited to participate in the first Conducting Mentorship Program at the Verbier Festival Academy (Switzerland). In addition to being mentored by Valery Gergiev, he acted as assistant conductor to Sir Simon Rattle, Gianandrea Noseda, Marc Minkowski and Gábor Takács-Nagy. At the conclusion of the Verbier Festival, he was awarded a Special Prize, to help him pursue his mentorship with maestros Gergiev and Noseda.
In 2017-18, Rivard served as Resident Conductor of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (Ontario, Canada). In 2017, he stepped in for Jean-Philippe Tremblay as Music Director of the Orchestre de la Francophonie, leading successful performances in Montreal, Quebec, Domaine Forget and Ottawa.
Born in Montréal (Québec), Rivard studied violin performance with Anne Robert and orchestral conducting with Raffi Armenian at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. He completed an MMus in Orchestral Conducting at McGill University under Alexis Hauser and Guillaume Bourgogne.
